Chinese company, Shanghong Shelf Co Ltd, is to set up its UK base in Mansfield. This is a direct result of a trade, investment, cultural and policy tie-up between Nottinghamshire County Council and Zhejiang Province in eastern China. What’s more, it’s the first investment following this deal. The company is currently finalising an agreement for a 3,750 sq.m facility on the Millennium Business Park. This new site could create up to 20 local jobs initially.
In fact, Shanghong Shelf Company employs 600 people in Zhejiang. And is one of the leading shelving manufacturers in China. The company specialises in custom designs for retail display, exhibitions and warehousing. In addition to enjoying a strong domestic market, they also sell into the UK, America, Japan, Australia and elsewhere. Council Leader, Councillor Kay Cutts, and Chief Executive, Anthony May, were in China last month to shake hands on the deal.
The company was part of a delegation of 60 businesses from Zhejiang, which travelled to Nottinghamshire in June. This trade and investment symposium was organised by Nottinghamshire County Council and the China Council for the Promotion of Investment and Trade (CCPIT). The event created an opportunity for Nottinghamshire businesses and organisations to discuss new trade opportunities with Zhejiang firms and was the largest ever Chinese trade delegation to visit Nottinghamshire.
A partnership approach
The County Council worked with partners to identify appropriate production sites. Thereafter, Invest Ashfield & Mansfield helped meet the company’s employment, recruitment and training needs.
Councillor Kay Cutts said: “We are absolutely thrilled that our friendship with Zhejiang is already reaping rewards for the local economy. After all, it’s less than six months into our new and exciting partnership. This ties in with our efforts to support economic growth and new jobs for the county. Zhejiang Shanghong Shelf company representatives were very impressed with what they saw of Nottinghamshire. This included our heritage, skills base and central location, in addition to our future growth plans.”
Marketing NG Chief Executive Brendan Moffett commented: “We have been delighted to support Zhejiang Shelf Company’s UK investment in Nottinghamshire. We initially met at the successful Trade and Investment Symposium in June. Furthermore, Millennium Business Park is an excellent strategic location for the business and we will continue, with partners to support them on their subsequent growth in Nottinghamshire.”
